Michael Cogbill for Congress

John Lewis Michael Cogbill

Representative John Lewis and Michael Cogbill

Michael Cogbill was Born at the now-shuttered Hahnemann University Hospital and raised in North Philadelphia by a single mother and proud Transit Workers Local 234 union member. Michael is an experienced organizer, a relentless activist and takes a pragmatic approach to problem-solving, with a track record of delivering and lighting the way. Most recently, Michael served as organizing coordinator and acting political director for the Philadelphia Council AFL-CIO. Before joining the Central Labor Council, Michael served as a community organizer for the state wide gun violence prevention organization CeasefirePA. In that role Michael worked relentlessly to educate gun violence survivors and activists on the mechanics of issue advocacy in conjunction with gun violence prevention policy. One of Michael's most significant efforts was his activism to bring awareness to trans-phobic violence and trans-panic homicides.

Prior to serving as an advocacy organizer, Michael worked as a Democratic political operative. In 2016 he served as a Philadelphia field operative on the campaign of Josh Shapiro for Attorney General, during the same cycle Michael served as finance director for State Representative Donna Bullock's contested reelection campaign. Michael's additional experience includes working to elect Judicial candidates that were highly recommended by the Phila Bar Association, serving as a field organizer for The For our Future Fund and serving as a canvasser for the Democratic National Committee. Michael has also worked for non-profit organizations such as United Communities, Keep Philly Beautiful and the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program.

During the most consequential election of our lifetime in 2020, Michael directed the political programming for the Philadelphia Council AFL-CIO while simultaneously serving as Pennsylvania State Director of civic engagement for the National NAACP. Post-election, Michael was appointed to serve as political action chair for the Pennsylvania State Conference NAACP.
